90s Revival, DWTS, and 3 Must-Have Pieces for Fall…

Good afternoon, friends! I’m proud to report that there were no crazy makeup mishaps this morning and all the product went where it was supposed to…Mondays can really throw you for a loop.  It did, however, redeem itself in the form of Dancing with the Stars.  Now, I never actually watched this show for more than 4 consecutive minutes before last night, but there was something about the cast that really intrigued me – hello, if Bill Nye The Science Guy was going to be dancing, you know I’d be watching! Also, my inner Disney teen was probably far too excited to see Corbin Bleu, and that trashy-reality TV version of myself was definitely looking out for Snooki (er, Nicole…) – who, by the way, actually looked gorgeous and incredibly fit, which is obviously a far cry from her days on the Shore. I have to say, I was pretty impressed with the dancing and definitely touched by the underlying message of determination and strength as exhibited by the two contestants struggling with debilitating diseases: Jack Osbourne and the lovely Valerie Harper.  Did I just find my new guilty pleasure?

In other news, apparently Timberland boots are being revived from the 90s grave they were buried in and are fashionable again.  I’m sorry, but,… what?  I get it, they are considered to be a little piece of Americana, a little glimpse into urban street style, but to be fair, they. are. work. boots.  So, unless you plan on doing some carpentry or want to get busy rewiring some faulty electrical work, please, take them off.  It kind of baffles me that some of the world’s most noteworthy fashion designers are all about this trend.  Take the glorious designer of BCBG and Herve Leger, Max Azria, for example.  In an interview by Yahoo, he states: “It could be very stylish if you do a contradiction with a very feminine dress with these tough shoes. The balance is fantastic and very sexy.” I understand the whole androgynous, mixed sexuality, artistic angle you’re advocating, but Max, but if I’m going to be feminine, I’m going to wear pumps, not work. boots.  My girl, Rebecca Minkoff came to the rescue with a resounding “no” when asked if it were in style.  She gets me. And, now you know.

Finally, these 3 fab runway trends are totally do-able for Fall: leopard/animal print, leather, and emerald green.

Oh Burberry, how pretty are you.  I’ve never been a big animal print lover; however, I’ve learned over time that moderation with (mostly) anything, including prints, is A-okay.  Since the New York Fall Fashion Week in the Spring, I’ve been on a mad hunt for a good pair of leopard pumps or flats.  Because trends change in an instant, I’ll probably settle on something more affordable, but, how cute are these, Loubs?!

As I sit here and type in my leather moto jacket by Zara, I can wholeheartedly say, I’ve bought into this craze.  There’s something special about leather that adds instant glam to even the most casual outfits.  Dressed up or dressed down, a touch of this versatile fabric can really pump up your chic factor. My next must-have? Leather leggins.

Move over burgundy, there’s a new deep hue in town: emerald green.  This color hit the runways (thanks, Pantone) in full force and I’m not mad about it.  What a beautiful color. Why haven’t we been this obsessed with it before!? Let’s all go get some emerald anything and be the gems that we are…(I was well overdue for a pun…)

To anyone giving a cursory glance towards my ankles lately (um, who isn’t?), it’s no secret I’m all about the ankle boot trend this season. I’m loving the shapes, sizes, cuts and colors – what’s that sound? Oh, riiiight, it’s my wallet groaning in agreement. Quiet down, you silly thing! We’re trying to look at boots here.

Cool Wwwwhhhhip…

Get ready for a really random post.  First things first…we haven’t had a “Verdict” in a while… I’m definitely long overdue for picking apart celeb outfits and unapologetically declaring one a winner. That sounds hard, but really, they clearly don’t care what I think.

And. here. we. go…

Image

I was flipping through some photos of some style-stealing celebs and came across this one.  Both ladies are totally gorg and on trend with the sheer blouse, but let’s face it, some people wear certain items better than others.  I’m always a big fan of the “polished” look so for me Miranda Kerr takes this one. The sleek navy skinny pant coupled with the fantastic and always effortlessly chic bare, nude pump really kick this outfit up a notch.  It’s totally casual, but still looks put-together – a “can’t-go-wrong” combo in my opinion.

So where did Jennifer Hudson, the newly slimmed down diva, go awry?  Well, it certainly wasn’t her playful hair or fresh-faced makeup.  For me, it was the sloppy buttoning of the untucked blouse and the navy and black legging pairing.  Now I know the blue/black rule technically no longer applies, but I’m sorry… I just don’t like it.  It almost looks like you got dressed in the dark and you tried to match colors, but failed.  I will say, I love Jenny’s loafers.  These babies are so in right now and I’m dying to get my hands on a pair!

Overall “Verdict”?  The beautious Miranda and her flawless after-baby figure for the win!

______

Here’s where things get random.  Wondering about the title?  Even if you aren’t, you should be and you also should have said it in Stewie’s voice…but that’s beside the point.  Anyway, in yesterday’s sweet treats post I failed to mention a really adorable companion to this winter’s inevitable hot chocolate binge: I give you the cool ‘whhhhip’ heart!

Image

Ta-da!

This couldn’t be easier either.  Simply buy a tub of this creamy goodness, freeze it in a pan, and then use a heart-shaped cookie cutter to instantly make your drab, yet delicious drink, more appealing.

Want another twist on classic hot cocoa?  How about strawberry white hot chocolate. Yup, that’s right. Pink, creamy, chocolaty…did I mention it’s pink!?

Image

How cute is this!?  Everyone should be drinking this, like, all the time. Even if you aren’t drinking it, just have it near you…it’s that pretty. Thanks to Darla of Bakingdom (such a clever name, right!?), we can all have a little fun this winter.  Check out the recipe below!

WHAT YOU NEED

1 lb. fresh strawberries, hulled

1/3 cup sugar
1 tablespoon lemon juice

3 cups (750 ml) milk
1 cup (250 ml) heavy cream (for a lighter version, omit the cream and replace with more milk)
1/4 cup white chocolate, chopped

**NOTE: For a semi-homemade version, replace the strawberries, sugar, and lemon juice with 1/4 cup strawberry milk drink mix, such as Nesquik.

**NOTE: If you want yours sweeter, add up to an extra half cup of sugar while the mixture is cooking.

HOW TO DO IT

Slice the strawberries then toss them in a medium bowl with the sugar and lemon juice.

Cover and set aside for one hour.

Stir the strawberry mixture to evenly coat everything, then transfer it to a blender or food processor. Process until completely pureed, then press the strawberries through a fine mesh sieve to remove the seeds.

Pour the strawberries back into the processor and add the milk and cream. Process until blended.

Transfer the mixture to a small saucepan set over medium heat in the white chocolate.  Cooking over medium heat, whisking almost constantly, until it just barely begins to lightly boil, about 10 minutes; remove from heat.

Transfer to your favorite mug, top with marshmallows or whipped cream, and any other yummy treats.

Here’s to hearts and polka dots!

Great Fashion Finds…On Wheels!…

Yep, your eyes are reading that correctly.  You aren’t still reading about cupcakes on wheels, this is all new!  Stationary stores are so last year. Allow me to introduce you to The Fashion Truck. I’m not good at math, but this is genius x 12452.

Don’t believe this one either?  Check this out – Image

Image

Completely fab, right? Ab-so-lut-ely.  I had the pleasure of meeting the face behind the boutique, Emily Benson, and she is just great. Not only is she obviously business savvy, but her fashion IQ is through the roof.  Having worked with big name companies such as Abercrombie & Fitch, Henri Bendel, and Club Monaco, she is well versed in classic styles and current trends which makes for a delightful shopping experience – both for my eyes and my wallet.

Image

On a budget? No problem.  The Fashion Truck’s merchandise all retails for $100 or less!  This price point makes for some serious steals on great pieces – especially accessories, but I may be biased. I walked up her steps with curiosity and left with a chunky, gold link necklace with navy enamel embellishments. Chunky? Gold? Link?  Check, check, andddd check – I’m coming for you, Fall.

One last thing!  A big plus for us fashion forward, Olivia Palermo wanna-bes is that Emily’s inventory is constantly changing to reflect the most up-to-date styles, as well as those on the verge of becoming “the next big thing.” Bye-bye months of waiting for the latest trends to hit stores, The Fashion Truck probably already has them.

Ah-mazing.

Looking for Emily and her Truck?  She tends to set up shop in the Boston/Greater Boston area. Or you could always have her come to you by booking a “Truck Stop” for a party – so fun!

For someone always on the go, she’s pretty accessible:

Fall Fever Part II…

While I spent some time with DVF in my last post, it’s time to get reacquainted with our old friends, Banana Republic, J.Crew, and Ann Taylor Loft.  All three stores offer fashion forward looks for a more affordable price.  Although it’s always great to have nice things, sometimes looking chic can really break the bank.

After scouring the websites and runway reviews for these fab outfitters, I came across some amazing finds that will definitely give your fall wardrobe a fresh update.  Like many of the high-end designers, these fall collections feature bold colors like maroon, burgundy, turquoise, orange/coral, mustard, and purple, revamped classic autumn fabrics like tweed and houndstooth, and intricate patterns that add interest to an otherwise average outfit without being overbearing.  In keeping with summer’s biggest trend, color-blocking is still in high gear, perhaps most notably in accessories.  Sometimes a unexpected pop of color (think bangle, bag, or earrings) can transform an outfit from “drab to fab” instantly, and often for under $50.

Check out a few of my favorite finds below:

Fall Fever Part I…

Okay, so call me crazy, but even with this fantastic sunny, summer weather we’ve been having on the East Coast, I am so ready for fall.  There’s something about the crisp, cool air, pumpkin spice lattes, and hot apple cider that excites me.

Food and cinnamon confections aside, fall trends and collections will be in full swing and I couldn’t be happier.  Back in February, when designers wowed us with their Fall 2012 collections, I’ll admit I was more focused on what bright colored bathing suit to wear to the beach than what darker-shaded coat I’d be wearing in 7 months.  However, fall is now just around the corner and my eyes can’t help but be fixated on all the amazing colors and fabrics that the collections have to offer.

One of my favorite dress designers is the iconic Diane Von Furstenberg, or DVF.  While my wallet lusts for an endless supply of disposable income to be able to afford all of her genius looks, for now, I’ll just have to settle on drooling over these beauties…or at least until my money tree is ready for harvesting…

Check out a few of my personal favs from her Fall 2012 collection.  Here’s to more dynamic color-blocking, brilliant burgundies, and body-hugging blacks…

So, I’ve made the executive decision since I am dying to wear my most favorite DVF Zarita dress in the fall, I’m considering it part of the Fall Collection and posting it below… Sorry, Diane..

Andddd, a pretty turquoise for good measure…
